So, I was having the type of day the weather (today) represented… somewhat humid but still a little cold. Walking around on my lunch break a little pissed after speaking to UMUC (University of Maryland University College) Appeal Committee about my account and if they had made a decision on it. They told me (several times) that it takes four to six weeks to make a decision on whether I have to pay for Summer classes I never attended, and dropped a little later than their deadline. As simple as that may seem, they are saying it would take over 8 weeks now, hence delaying my plans to register this semester in a timely manner. So, not only are they taking WAY TOO MUCH time to come to a conclusion, they are also FALSELY ADVERTISING their processes to their students. I say so because at the University of Wisconsin – Madison (which I previously attended), when they say 6 weeks… they mean 6 weeks. I thought what makes an institution is its ability to set and keep guidelines and parameters it sets. I guess NOT! There seemed to be a lack of CONSIDERATION for my life plans, time and goals as I spoke to a lady named Veronica (Appeal Dept.) at 240-684-8288, who could have said ‘Deal or Don’t Deal’. I was tempted to pull out of the school entirely and find a way to transfer all AID and Grants I had received to another institution that would appreciate my ambition (in the least)
Rather than go ‘bananas’ on them or act impulsively, I decided to take a walk and probably grab a bite for lunch, while updating my BB status to reflect what I think about some friends I have who I wonder why we stay friends. My cravings were for a Pita, so guess where I went? Perfect Pita! Upon arriving at perfect Pita (where they already know my order), I saw the Moroccan lady who usually tends to my order but she looked different. Today, she had on a head tie (which she normally doesn’t), but still wore her great smile. I smiled back and said “Hello!” and she did back responding “Long time…” I followed up by asking her where she had been (as I didn’t see her the last time I was there), only to hear her SAD NEWS... She has BREAST CANCER!!!! Wow... wow… WOW!!!! What do you say to someone who just found out they have BREAST CANCER? I know there are potential cures or solutions, or ways to halt/remedy the situation, but can you imagine that PROBLEM? Having that PROBLEM or ISSUE? Now, she’s Bald from chemotherapy, but she still SMILES J
Needless to say, I stopped being mad at UMUC or at the stupid BB friends. I started to appreciate what is going well with me… mine. I began to say ‘Thank You, Lord’ as I left the Pita place with my Chicken Pita in hand. Not without telling the Moroccan sister I will be praying for her... and she responded “Thank You, Please Do” again with a smile
